Here’s a randomly generated cipher of unknown type. My ID tests were unconvincing so I knew it was a type they didn’t cover, which made the type fairly obvious. I generated a crib by pasting the caesar-shifted plaintext into my minimum crib program using a new “caesar-shifted” option that gets the original plaintext, uses the original to generate possible cribs and outputs cribs in caesar-shifted form. Using a crib I solved the cipher by going back and forth between an interactive solver and a hill-climber.

  1. That’s a toughie. My Analyzer diagnosed the type correctly, but I had to solve it interactively. I’d almost given up on placing the crib when it finally clicked.
